The Catholic Diocese of Kundiawa plays a vital role in providing spiritual and social support across Simbu 

The Highlands Women Human Rights Defenders Movement (HWHRDM) is a coalition of grassroots and community-based organizations from Papua New Guinea’s seven Highlands provinces, working to protect and promote human rights in the face of tribal conflict, gender-based violence, and sorcery-related abuse. Founded by local women leaders, the movement offers legal advocacy, psychosocial support, human rights education, and conflict prevention services. It also contributes to policy reform efforts, including the proposed Human Rights Defenders Protection Bill, and collaborates with groups like Kup Women for Peace and Voice for Change to amplify women’s voices and foster resilience across communities.

The Family Support Centre (FSC), established under the Simbu Provincial Health Authority and led by manager Jean Kupo, provides vital medical and psychosocial care for survivors of family and sexual violence in the province. Supported through specialized counselling training and in alignment with national health priorities, the FSC offers emergency treatment, trauma counselling, safety planning, and mental health services. It addresses daily cases—particularly those involving girls under 16—and aims to expand access through satellite centres across Simbu’s six districts. By collaborating with partners like Kundiawa Nursing College, the FSC is building local capacity and creating a more compassionate health response for survivors.

Kup Women for Peace (KWP), founded in 2000 in Simbu Province, Papua New Guinea, is a grassroots organization led by Human Rights Defender Angela Apa that works to end tribal violence, gender-based abuse, and sorcery accusation-related violence. Operating without formal infrastructure, KWP provides crisis support, shelter, and repatriation for survivors, while also offering mediation, legal guidance, and human rights education. Their rapid response networks, collaborations with local institutions, and partnerships with national and international organizations enable them to resolve disputes, reunite families, and support displaced communities—making them a vital force for peace and empowerment across the Highlands.

The Kundiawa Police in Simbu Province actively combat Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SARV) through targeted operations that apprehend perpetrators of abuse, despite limitations in resources and infrastructure. They work closely with organizations like The Voice Inc. and the Catholic Diocese of Kundiawa to support victims, notably through the SARV Legal Help Desk, which provides legal aid, protection orders, and civil law options such as defamation claims. These collaborative efforts strengthen access to justice and demonstrate a multifaceted approach to dismantling SARV and restoring safety in affected communities.

The Community Development Agency (CDA) in Simbu Province, Papua New Guinea plays a pivotal role in addressing SARV. Through its extensive grassroots network, CDA facilitates community-led interventions, awareness campaigns, and referral pathways that support survivors of SARV. The agency works closely with local leaders, law enforcement, and health providers to promote legal literacy, trauma-informed care, and peacebuilding dialogues that challenge harmful beliefs and practices.
